Richard J. Figura
|

|
Mr. Figura's specialty is governmental law, and he is a former
president of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys. In
addition to general governmental law, Mr. Figura provides assistance
to public and private clients with regard to property tax assessment
issues, general real estate law, eminent domain, zoning, and land use
disputes. He splits his time between the main office in Flint and the
Traverse City area office in Empire, MI.
He is a member of the firm, and is a graduate of the Wayne State
University Law School. Since serving as city attorney for the City
of Flint in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Mr. Figura has represented
and continues to serve as general counsel for several cities, villages,
and townships. He served as co-counsel for the City of Flint in the
largest industrial tax appeal in Michigan history and has represented
governmental agencies in more than 100 circuit court eminent domain
cases. He continues to provide specialized legal services for the City
of Flint, the Economic Development Corporation of the City of Flint and
the Flint-Genesee Economic Growth Alliance.
He is the co-founder of the Baker College Institute for Local Government
Education which provides seminars and workshops on a variety of local
government subjects for public officials and employees in the greater
Genesee County area. He is a past chairman of Board of Directors for
the Flint Are Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Regents for Baker
CollegeFlint, and he continues to serve on both boards. In addition, he
is a member of the Baker College Board of Trustees and serves on the
boards of various community organizations, including the Flint Area
Convention and Visitors Bureau and Priority Children, Inc.
He is a resident of Leelanau County in northern Michigan where he manages
a northern Michigan office. He is the president of the Leelanau County
Economic Development Corporation and a member of the Empire Township
Planning Commission.
He is a member of the Michigan, Genesee County and Grand Traverse-
Leelanau-Antrim bar associations as well as the Michigan Association of
Municipal Attorneys and the International Municipal Attorneys Association.
He belongs to the Public Corporation, Alternative Dispute Resolution and
Employment Law sections of the Michigan Bar Association.
A growing part of his practice is dedicated to alternative dispute
resolution activities and he has served as an arbitrator and mediator in
more than 200 cases. He is a member of the American Arbitration
Association where he has been a commercial arbitrator for more than 12
years. he holds an SCAO certification as a civil mediator and is on the
list of approved civil mediators in several judicial circuits in the
State of Michigan. He is a member of the ADR Committee of the Grand
Traverse-Leelanau-Antrim Bar Association and is the chairperson of the
ADR Committee of the Genesee County Bar Association.
